Tsenter Inc. - high tech. company -has invented secondary electrochemical cell comprising from reversible lithium and hydrogen electrodes (Li-H2 cell). The cell includes a hydrogen electrode, a lithium electrode, catholyte and anolyte systems, and lithum ion permeable separator disposed between. Having specific energy equal 32MJ/kg this chemistry is free from major disadvantages of Li-O2 battery. Indeed, discharging lithium ion product is soluble in water and H2 inside of cell do not present risk of unintended combustion. The H2 is consumed on hydrogen electrode in process of electrical charging and liberates electrons which move to Li electrode where Li-ions are reduced to metallic Li. During discharging Li generates electrons, which move via electrical load to hydrogen electrode and reduce protons to gaseous hydrogen. Gaseous hydrogen is realised in atmosphere in case of small cells or moves to hydrogen electrode of reversible hydrogen-air FC which contribute about 25% of total delivered energy. In pocess of charging hydrogen electrode of FC generates H2 in order to charge Li electrode in Li-H2 battery and air electrode of FC produce oxygen. In fact. it charges the Li-O2 battery through an intermediate charge carrier, namely H2.
Tsenter Inc. nnovative battery management techniques for lithium mostly and nickel-based batteries representing a major technology breakthrough over traditional battery management techniques. Tsenter Inc. approach is very economical because it is mostly software based. The battery’s operating performance is completely managed as result of implementation:
1. An innovative charging algorithm dynamically adjusted based on battery state of health. Based on chemical polarization data Tsenterinc's algorithm provide information concerning battery working surface, EDLC, degree of battery wearing. Once this information is obtained algorithm assigns charging parametrs.
2. EDLC and ohm polarization value allows to predict how battery will react on stadionary and pulse discharging current.
3. Cell’s shunt, swelling, degree of wearing, and potential lithium electroplating detection.
Dr. Boris Tsenter -CTO and co-founder Tsenter Inc. has a Ds and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and Master Degree in math. He is the inventor of the nickel-hydrogen battery widely used in space applications. He is the author of three battery books, 82 technical papers, and holds more than 100 US and international patents. Ds. Tsenter has extensive battery expertise with Li-based, Ni-based, and Pb-Pb02 chemistries for telecommunication, HEV, PHEV, EV, military and other applications. The last five years he was working under Navy contracts concerning management of aviation batteries.
